Welcome to Autumn:
A Season of Transition and Renewal
As the vibrant energy of Summer begins to wane, we step into the serene and reflective season of Autumn. In Chinese Medicine, each season is associated with an element, and Autumn is deeply connected to the Metal element. This element represents structure, clarity, and the ability to let go of what no longer serves us. Just as the trees release their leaves, Autumn invites us to shed old patterns, emotions, and habits, making space for renewal and refinement.

Autumn: A Season of Transition and Renewal
Autumn: Chinese Medicine:
The Metal element governs the Lungs and Large Intestine, two organs that play vital roles in our physical and emotional well-being. The Lungs are responsible for taking in the new (breath, inspiration, and life force), while the Large Intestine helps us release the old (waste, toxins, and emotional baggage). During Autumn, it’s essential to support these organs and embrace practices that foster balance, resilience, and immunity.
The Five Elements of Chinese Medicine Diagram
This diagram represents the interactions of the Five Elements (Wu Xing) in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each element—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—is associated with specific seasons, tastes, colours, organs, and natural qualities. The outer ring categorises these relationships, showing how they correspond to different aspects of health and nature. At the centre, the star-shaped pattern symbolises the internal interactions between the elements, reflecting their dynamic balance in the natural and human world.
How to Care for Ourselves in Autumn
1. Nourish with Seasonal Foods: In Chinese Medicine, Autumn is a time to incorporate warm, grounding, and slightly spicy foods to support the Lungs and Large Intestine. Think root vegetables, soups, stews, ginger, garlic, and pungent herbs like rosemary and thyme. These foods help strengthen the digestive system and build immunity as the weather cools.
2. Practice Letting Go: Just as the trees release their leaves, Autumn is an ideal time to reflect on what you need to release, whether it’s physical clutter, emotional burdens, or limiting beliefs. Journaling, Breathwork, or Somatic Healing Practices can help you process and let go. We offer these services in clinic and fortnightly in our groups.
3. Breathe Deeply: The Lungs are the organ of Autumn, so focus on deep, mindful breathing to enhance your lung capacity and oxygenate your body. Practices like Qi Gong, yoga, or simply spending time in nature can help you connect with the crisp, clean energy of the season.
4. Protect Your Energy: As the days grow shorter and the air becomes cooler, it’s important to conserve your energy. Dress warmly, especially around your neck and chest, to protect your Lungs from cold winds. Incorporate restorative practices like Reiki, meditation, or gentle movement to nourish your body and mind.
5. Embrace the Beauty of Change: Autumn reminds us that change is a natural and beautiful part of life. Use this season to set intentions, refine your goals, and align with your true self.
