Allostatic Load – What Is It?

What is Allostatic Load?

Allostatic load refers to the cumulative wear and tear on the body and brain resulting from repeated or chronic stress.  It represents the physiological consequences of prolonged activation of stress-response systems, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, leading to dysregulation across multiple biological systems. This includes disruptions in cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and neuroendocrine functions.

The term was coined by Neuroendocrinologist Bruce McEwen and psychologist Eliot Stellar in 1993 to describe the “price people pay for adapting to stress.” When the body is repeatedly exposed to stressors without adequate recovery, the constant effort to maintain stability (a process called allostasis) leads to increased strain, or allostatic load, which can accelerate aging and increase the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, and cognitive decline.

Allostatic load is measured using a composite index of biomarkers; such as blood pressure, cortisol levels, cholesterol, waist-to-hip ratio, and inflammation markers that reflect systemic physiological dysregulation. It is not just about stress itself, but also about how the body responds to it over time, including failure to shut down stress responses or inadequate adaptive capacity.

See the image below for a summary of the kinds of things that influence our Allostatic Load…

Knowing Your Allostatic Load Can Help Prevent Disease:

Do you want to live a long, healthy life? Then you are in the right place. What if we told you that you could make a few adjustments to your lifestyle that would reduce your risk of developing an illness? This is actually possible, as long as you know which changes to make. Today, we’ll talk about the concept of “allostatic load” and how it could be managed in a way that improves your health.

Allostasis Helps Maintain Stability:

Allostasis refers to the changes a body goes through to restore its homeostatic balance. “Allo” means “variable,” so in combination with “stasis” it produces something like “staying the same by changing.” Allostasis is similar to homeostasis but it’s more concerned with how the brain helps the body change and adjust to new conditions.

Allostasis and Stress:

Not surprisingly, one of the biggest factors that throws off our body’s internal balance and stability is STRESS. For many of us, stress is a daily experience, whether it’s worrying about being late to work, missing meals or getting aggravated sitting in the rush hour traffic. Stress is actually not always a bad thing. In some situations, stress hormones help us focus, act fast and avoid unpleasant outcomes. When your body responds to stress, it does so by using resources in its nervous, endocrine and immune systems.

Internal vs. External Stress:

Stress is actually more complicated than you think. There are two different sources of stress: internal and external. Internal stress has to do with our bodies and originates inside of us. For example, dehydration can lead to internal stress, and so do overeating, negative thoughts and physical exhaustion. External stress, on the other hand, is often caused by external factors that are in some cases outside of our control. For example, low income and difficulty paying bills can be stressful. Relationships, social instability, work and environmental factors are other examples of external stress. It is possible to be subject to multiple stressors at the same time, and for some of us it’s a daily reality.

Allostatic Load:

The cumulative stress our bodies deal with through allostasis is known as allostatic load. When the body is able to find resources to manage the allostatic load and restore the balance, we feel resilient and bounce right back. But when allostasis is not successful and the body runs out of allocated resources to manage stress, we suffer from chronic stress and develop an allostatic overload.

ALLOSTATIC OVERLOAD is accumulation of unresolved stress that may eventually lead to illness. It may manifest itself as a chemical imbalance, disturbance in the sleep/awake cycles and even a cardiovascular disease. As a result of prolonged exposure to a growing allostatic load, you may develop such conditions as:

anxiety disorder, depression

depression and memory loss

hostility and aggressiveness

substance abuse and addiction

hypertension, heart disease or cancer

autoimmune disorders

chronic illness – cognitive decline eg. Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s etc

Think of allostatic load as one of the factors that determines your personal risk of disease. The higher the allostatic load, the more likely is your health to decline.

Some People Get More Stressed Than Others:

Stress is simply your body’s reaction to external or internal stimuli. As you might have noticed during your interactions with others, the same type of event may be stressful for you, but not for someone else in the same situation. For example, meeting a deadline on a project at work can stress you out immensely, while your co-worker remains incredibly calm and seems to no care much.

This can be partially explained by the different “conditioning” we go through as children. Often people who experience abuse, neglect or other traumatic events at a young age tend to train their bodies to overact and stress more over simpler things. Your genetic makeup, ethnicity, age and other personal factors also play a role in how you experience stress and how fast you recover. Everyone’s capacity to adapt (allostasis) is different, so some people are more likely to accumulate allostatic load than others.

How is Allostatic Load Measured?:

Allostatic load is measured using a composite index of biomarkers; such as blood pressure, cortisol levels, cholesterol, waist-to-hip ratio, and inflammation markers that reflect systemic physiological dysregulation. It is not just about stress itself, but also about how the body responds to it over time, including failure to shut down stress responses or inadequate adaptive capacity.

We measure your allostatic load through the combination of surveys and tests. First, we look at any symptoms you may be exhibiting that may indicate increased stress levels, such as frequent headaches or insomnia. Then we conduct a few tests and have you provide any recent bloodwork and other labs you had done. At this stage, we consider such factors as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, waist-to-hip ratio, inflammation, haemoglobin and similar factors.

With all this data combined, we are able to come up with your allostatic load score. If your score is high enough, we may recommend making certain lifestyle adjustments to help you prevent allostatic overload and stay healthy.

Reducing Your Allostatic Load:

Now that you know that high allostatic load may have long-term negative consequences for your health, you may wonder how you could reduce it. Reducing your allostatic load typically has three components:

  • Eliminating as many stressors as possible
  • Supplementing Redox Molecule with Asea
  • Reducing exposure to the remaining stressors
  • Counteracting stress with de-stressing activities

To be successful in this effort, first you need to know the sources of your allostatic load. It’s best to work with a functional medicine specialist to pinpoint these sources for you, because they definitely differ from person to person.

Depending on where your stress is coming from, here are a few ways to counteract it:

  • Regular exercise
  • Supplementing Redox Signalling Molecules in the Body
  • Social support from friends and family
  • Whole food diet and supplements – Asea Redox Molecules
  • Reducing exposure to household chemicals
  • Plenty of rest
  • Reducing self-criticism
  • Spending time doing what you enjoy

Often, a big part of reducing your allostatic load is mental. Simply changing your mentality from “go-go-go” to “stop and smell the roses” can make a big difference in your stress levels. It’s important to remember that taking care of yourself and your health is not selfish: it’s what you owe to yourself and your family.

OTHER EXTERNAL SOURCES OF STRESS

Allostatic Load – How Does Asea Help?

How Does Asea Help?

Redox has been known for a very long time – since 1903 – Pubmed – type Redox – see studies as early as 1903.

Redox a contraction of 2 words – reduction & oxidation – has to do with the transfer of electrons. This process occurs largely in our Mitochondria in each of our cells.

NRF2 is the principal pathway the body uses to combat Oxidative Stress & Inflammation, it’s one of the main tools the body has to fight against inflammation that we experience daily.

That’s really important because every single day we are exposed to 1000’s and 1000’s of times to different sources of oxidative stress e.g eating bad food, sunburn, toxins in our water, our food, our air, pesticides and herbicides in the food growing & harvesting process, genetically modified foods that are difficult for our bodies to digest and assimilate – we are exposed to these stressors 1000’s & 1000’s of times a day.

We are ‘BIO-ELECTRICAL BEINGS’; that means we’re ALIVE. That means our cells have LIFE in them. And that life is equivalent to about 70-100 millivolts of energy. If you think of a battery, the charge you have in your internal battery.

If our cell walls can maintain this electrical charge; we are considered “HEALTHY”. We can function and the cell can do everything it’s SUPPOSED to do.

That charge, comes from a little thing inside each of our cells called the Mitochondria. Think of these Mitochondria as the “power house of the cell”. This is how the cell makes the energy to keep itself “charged”.

If it’s not charged, remember – we’re NOT healthy…

So all the molecules coming out of and produced in our Mitochondria are called “Redox signalling Molecules” and we have BOTH Mitochondria and Redox Signalling molecules IN EVERY CELL of our body. So it’s very important – these are the molecules we use to make energy and to help the cells communicate and signal each other for maintenance of healthy cellular function. Hence the term “cell signalling” molecules.

These are native to the body which means EVERY cell in your body makes them to:

  • Protect

  • Detect

  • Repair

  • Replace

Damaged Cells… Any of our damaged cells…

So this is VERY IMPORTANT – we wouldn’t be able to live 3 minutes without being able to produce these molecules in each of the Mitochondria in each of our cells.

The Mitochondria are considered the “engine” of our cells. They control the delicate balance of Redox signalling and oxidative stress. So much like an engine, the Mitochondria produce energy but also produces a waste product – called metabolic waste… it’s the waste that’s created just through our metabolism. There’s also the ‘waste’ from outside – like toxins, pollutants, medications etc… but the most waste is PRODUCED WITHIN the cell.

Depending on how important the cell is, it determines how many “engines” you have in that cell. Gut cells only last 2-4 days. The lining of our gut, those cells are real simple cells, they only have 3 Mitochondria per cell. They’re easy to replace, they’re not very complicated. The rest of the body averages 200-300 Mitochondria per cell, depending on what type of tissue it is. The Heart doesn’t get a rest, it has to work 24 hours/day; it’s special, so it needs 8,000 Mitochondria per cell so you can imagine how much more oxidative stress your Heart is putting off. Remember the MORE MITOCHONDRIA, the MORE IMPORTANT the cell is. Also the more complicated it is for our body to make another one of the cells, so it takes longer.

NERVE and BRAIN cells are special – they have 2.5 MILLION engines (Mitochondria) per cell.

That just made them 2.5 million times more important than ANY OTHER cell in your body. But nobody talks about it…WHY? Because until now, we didn’t really know WHAT affects Brain Health and the cells in our brain.

Where’s the beginning of the stream where healing starts? It’s at the MOLECULAR Level. It’s the Redox Molecules coming out of those engines – the Mitochondria….

So if we have 2.5 MILLION in our BRAIN... Our brain gets pretty hot with all this amount of energy…And in that same note, our Brain is ONLY 2% of our body weight, yet it consumes 20% of our Blood. We have to keep the fire out… Because it gets hot – it wants to keep burning, those engines want to rev.. and we need to calm them down and keep them cool (out of an inflamed state); so we require ALL THAT BLOOD to do so.. did you know we’re the ONLY SPECIES on the planet that requires 20% of our blood flow for 2% of our body weight. That’s another AMAZING FACT that we all need to appreciate.

So Asea IS these Redox Molecules in a stable form that has a prolonged shelf life. (The Blue Bottle you see in my clinic).

The question so many have, “Is there research on ASEA?” listen to this exclusive interview with Hunter Dean, the Vice President of Production Operations at ASEA on the research that ASEA has done from safety, to double-blind placebo controlled studies on Genetic Expression and how Universities like Tauret Laboratories in Canada, Western Sydney University, Sydney Australia & Bath University, Bath, United Kingdom are now asking to do research with ASEA.

Find out about how the Tauret Double blind Placebo study showed a 20-31% increase in gene expression and how Western Sydney University found a 40-60% increase in the NRF2 pathway and Glutathione Production in the body of trial participants. (Glutathione – our master antioxidant). How the mitochondria play a major role in immune response and longevity.

Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe lethal X-linked monogenic recessive congenital muscular dystrophy caused by various types of mutations in the dystrophin gene (DG). It is one of the most common human genetic diseases and the most common type of muscular dystrophy, in part because DG is one of the largest protein-coding genes in the human genome with a relatively high risk of being affected by a large palette of mutations. Long-term corticosteroid therapy (LTCT) with deflazacort started at age 4 is the most accessible and used pharmacological therapy for DMD in Romania. “Asea® redox supplement” (ARS) is an approved dietary supplement in the European Union.

Several studies have shown that it is a very potent selective NRF2 activator, and thus a very potent, albeit indirect, antioxidant, with no toxicity up to high doses, in contrast to LTCT.

Case summary: This paper presents a 3-case series on the effects of Asea Redox Signalling in a 4-year-old, 5-year-old and 3-year-old boy all with DMD from Bucharest or Slobozia (Romania). This is the first report of this type worldwide. The parents of these boys had refused LTCT. They were treated with relatively high doses of ARS (Asea Redox Supplement) (3-7 mL/kg/day).

For two patients, ARS was administered in combination with medium doses of L-carnitine and omega-3 fatty acids for various intellectual disabilities. Periodic consults and assessments for rhabdomyolysis, medullar and liver toxicity markers (blood count, gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, creatine kinase-MB and serum myoglobin) were performed.

In vitro studies showed that Asea Redox Supplement (ARS) is a very potent and selective NRF2 activator, and thus a very potent indirect antioxidant. The in vivo studies also support this main pharmacological mechanism of ARS, with no toxicity at high doses, in contrast with much more toxic corticosteroids which are often refused by parents for their children with DMD.

ASEA Science: How Redox Signalling Molecules Support Cellular Balance and Oxidative Stress

Video Time Stamps for busy people:

0.10 Min

In today’s fast paced world, our bodies are constantly under stress. From pollution, poor diet and environmental toxins.

0.19 Min

Asea has found a way to help your body stay resilient, balanced and thriving at the Cellular Level.

0.27 Min

Since 2010, Asea has been the pioneer in Redox Technology and the leading company to bring to market the first product in the world certified to contain ACTIVE Redox Signalling Molecules.

0.43-0.55 Min – Understanding Redox Signalling Molecules:

Now, what does Redox Signalling mean? At the heart of cellular health, lies a powerful process; redox signalling.

0.56-1.03 Min

Redox, which is short for reduction and oxidation is the transfer of energy via electrons.

1.04Min

These tiny, high energy Redox molecules are ESSENTIAL for good communication between cells.

1.10Min

When we feel good, it’s the result of a harmony between the trillions and trillions of cells in our body.

1.19 Min

Redox Signalling molecules are NATIVELY produced within every cell in your body.

1.29 Min

They act as cell activators and cellular messengers. These molecules carry the messages that tell your cells to activate antioxidants which are your body’s natural defense against damage.

1.39 Min

Antioxidants are like body guards. They protect your cells. But they can’t do their job UNLESS Redox Signalling molecules TELL THEM TO.

1.49 Min – Why Redox Balance Matters

Oxidative stress creates an imbalance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants, or in other words, between the harmful molecules and the protective ones.

2.06 Min

An imbalance can be a result of SEVERAL environmental factors such as exposure to pollutants, infections, poor diet and toxins.

2.15 Min

To counter this, your body utilises Redox Signalling Molecules to communicate and to help maintain a healthy balance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants.

2.26 Min

Your health depends on a balance between Oxidative stress and Anti-oxidant defenses.

2.33 Min

As we age and as stress and environmental toxins inundate our lives and weaken our defences, normal cellular function declines and with it, the body’s ability to produce and maintain a proper balance of Redox Signalling Molecules.

2.50 Min

That’s when cell function starts to slow down and we feel the effects. Less energy, slower recovery and weaker defences.

3.00 Min – Scientific Research since 1903:

For many years, Researchers have explored ways to supplement Redox Signalling Molecules in your body to combat the effects of age, toxins and environmental stress.

3.12Min

In 2007, Asea Founders Verdis & Tyler Norton saw the potential in a Revolutionary Redox Technology developed by a Bio-Tech company and acquired it.

3.25 Min

After extensive research and laboratory testing, Asea has developed a PATENTED technology that replicates these NATURALLY OCCURRING molecules outside of the body.

3.35 Min

Asea’s the FIRST product in the WORLD CERTIFIED to contain active Redox Signalling Molecules.

3.44 Min

Historically, only manufactured in small quantities, a team of Researchers spent months finding a way to scale the production of Redox Signalling Molecules in a shelf stable form.

3.56 Min

Since the company’s inception in 2010, tens of millions of bottles of Asea and Renu 28 Gel tubes have been sold and Asea now OPERATES in 34 markets impacting MILLIONS OF LIVES around the world.

4.10 Min – How Redox Signalling Works

4.17 Min

Redox signalling molecules are extremely tiny, so small, they can easily move in and out of your cells.

4.24 Min

Upon entering a cell, these molecules act like an on/off switch by donating their energy to initiate cell signalling and help your body RESPOND DYNAMICALLY TO STRESS and maintain Redox Homeostasis, the BALANCE between oxidants and antioxidants. Which is KEY to STAYING HEALTHY.

4.46 Min

These molecules trigger a cascade effect that enhances resilience and wellness. Redox technology operates at the genetic and cellular level influencing the ENTIRE BODY.

5.01 Min

When your cells TALK CLEARLY, your WHOLE BODY works better.

5.06 Min

Unlike symptom focussed treatments, Redox ADDRESSES THE ROOT CAUSE, restoring cellular communication which is ESSENTIAL for maintaining overall health.

5.18 Min – Our Certifications

Manufactured exclusively at the Redox Centre in Utah in the United States, Asea has earned several certifications including FDA registration, NSF Certification and GMP Compliance with annual Audits (Good Manufacturing Practice Certification); resulting in consistent top grades. We hold BOTH HALAL and Kosher Certifications as well.

5.45 Min

And our facility with WORLD CLASS QUALITY CONTROL ensuring EVERY PRODUCT meets the highest standards.

5.52 Min

Safety testing with EUROFINS, a world LEADER IN BIOANALYTICAL TESTING confirmed that Asea’s Redox signalling products are NON-CYTOTOXIC and NON-MUTOGENIC underscoring PRODUCT SAFETY.

6.07 Min

A German Independent Dermatological Institute Dermatest affirms Renu 28 and Redox Gold’s impressive results for safety and efficacy with the HIGHEST 5 STAR RATING for both products.

6.21 Min

BQC Redox Laboratories in SPAIN, certify the presence of ACTIVE REDOX Signalling Molecules in our products.

6.30 Min

Asea has also PATENTED the processes used to produce it’s Redox Products.

6.38 Min – Advancing the Science Behind Redox Signalling

Redox signalling is a growing area of Science that looks at how cells TALK TO EACH OTHER.

6.48 Min

Tens of thousands of studies have been published on this topic and interest is growing FAST.

6.53 Min

Asea is deeply invested in advancing the Science behind Redox Signalling, partnering with Universities globally to validate and explore the mechanisms of action and the applications of Redox Technology

7.07 Min

We partner with top universities like the UNIVERSITY OF BATH, in the U.K. and the University of Sydney in Australia. (Western Sydney University) on studies researching the next generation of Redox and the impact of those molecules on different types of cells.

7.24 Min

ONE BIG DISCOVERY – the research conducted INDEPENDENTLY by BOTH Universities found that the NRF2 pathway was SIGNIFICANTLY impacted by Redox Signalling molecules.

7.35 Min

What is NRF2? – NRF2 is the MASTER switch regulator for combating oxidative stress. It plays a CRUCIAL ROLE in regulating the body’s Antioxidant response.

7.46 Min

It helps protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. NRF2 is ESSENTIAL FOR MAINTAINING CELLULAR HEALTH! Making it a KEY PLAYER in OVERALL WELLBEING and relevant in VARIOUS MEDICAL CONTEXTS such as CARDIOVASCULAR protection, GUT HEALTH and a HEALTHY STRESS RESPONSE.

8.06 Min

One key finding in the research was that supplementation with Redox signalling molecules INCREASED NRF2 activity by up to 60!

8.17 Min

But that’s not all, ANOTHER KEY FINDING FROM THOSE 2 UNIVERSITIES is that these molecules increase the cell’s production of PROTECTIVE PROTEINS like Glutathione which play an important role in prompting overall balance.

8.31 Min

Glutathione is a powerful bodyguard for your cells. It’s a NATURAL ANTIOXIDANT that your body makes and it’s job is to protect your cells from harm.

8.42 Min

The research revealed that Supplementation with Redox Signalling Molecules increased Glutathione production by 40%! In short, Asea Redox based products help and BOOST your cells to do what they’re already designed to do.

8.42 Min

The research revealed that Supplementation with Redox Signalling Molecules increased Glutathione production by 40%! In short, Asea Redox based products help and BOOST your cells to do what they’re already designed to do.

9.02 Min – Our Commitment to Excellence

At Asea, we’ve pioneered an entirely new category in Health Science. WE OWN THE PROCESS. THE PATENTS AND THE KNOW HOW. Redox is at our core, with that, we offer something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT and ENTIRELY OURS. A New Perspective on World Events

Kyle, a motivational speaker and Coach shares his Perspective of the war within each of us, the battle that rages between our ego and our soul..

What if the most important question isn’t “what do I do?”… but simply “what’s here?”

In this April message, Kyle invites you to step out of the mind’s constant search for problems and solutions and into the truth of the present moment.

While the ego chases drama, fear and control, your true self exists in something much quieter… something it calls “nothing.” But that “nothing” is actually everything.

This video explores: Why the ego is addicted to problems (and how it keeps you stuck) The difference between reacting to life vs. experiencing what’s actually here. How asking “what’s here?” reconnects you to peace, clarity and truth.

Why trying to “fix” your life may be the very thing blocking real transformation. How revelation, intuition, and next steps arise naturally when you stop forcing answers.

When you stop feeding fear… it dissolves. When you stop chasing solutions… clarity finds you. When you return to what’s here… you return to who you are. This is an invitation to let go of the constant mental noise and discover a deeper connection to peace, presence and something greater moving through you. Happy April.

Energy Flows Where Attention Goes

Energy Flows Where Attention Goes…

What we give our attention to is what gets created. In a world that has a 24 hour News cycle that is negative, promotes fear and worry for the future, it’s important to take time out and recalibrate, still our heart and connect or re-connect with our centre. We are a creative force and what we focus on is what gets created. If we focus on world events, we feed our energy into world events and they escalate.

If we focus on our wellness, our health, our peace of mind and heart, that is what we create. We can weather the storms of life much better when we are centred, grounded and aligned with our true divine Nature. Ways to reconnect:

  1. Develop stillness & a calm mind through Meditation & Breathwork
